Improv for VO
A 5 week course with master improv teacher & VO Alan Marriott
Monday 17th February - 17th March 2025
7pm -9pm (UK)
This five week class introduces students to Alan’s tried and tested Five Point Method approach to voice acting. Using Alan’s thirty years experience as a voice actor and improv pioneer we’ll be improvising characters and scenarios that explore the five points of great VO performance.
Week By Week:
Week One - PACE - In the first week we look at SPEED/PACE and how to effectively define a character’s inner and outer speed. While improvising monologues, you’ll also learn how to use ‘beats and pauses’ as well as the concept of ‘lifting’, ‘spreading’, and ‘thrilling’ individual words and phrases.
Week Two - PITCH - In week two use of the five PITCH ranges are explored through mirroring improvs and two character scenarios. You’ll learn how to find and lock a character’s pitch range so that it blends and contrasts with other characters.
Week Three - TONE PLACEMENT/RESONANCE - Using photos and designs you’ll learn how to manipulate the resonance of your voice (nasal, jaw, eyes, ears, throat, gravel, etc.) and find the character’s ‘tone centre’. We’ll also be using impressions and common improv games and exercises as a way to play with resonance.
Week four - GESTURE - Finding the emotional centre of a character (it’s GESTURE) is one of the key skills in both voice acting and improv and we’ll be looking at ‘pre-life’, temperament, Laban efforts, mantras and more to help you to discover how your characters react to the world.
Week Five - MUSICALITY AND PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER - In this final week we explore the unique groove and melody you can use to help define and lock a character. Finally, we’ll look at taking direction and how to decode what a voice director is trying to tell you.
